The most commonly diagnosed cancer in men is prostate cancer. It is often referred to as the silent killer because it is asymptomatic at first. Prostate cancer has very few early symptoms and those such as trouble urinating or painful ejaculation are also symptoms of much less serious disease such as enlarged prostate.

When it comes to taking care of our bodies men have a tendency to concentrate on their outer bodies. We have a gym membership and lift weights and do other various exercises that give us a great physique. But what do we do for our inner bodies? This may be the reason we sometimes come down with diseases that can be prevented with a little knowledge. As men we need to do a little more research to gain an understanding of what we can do to make sure we are taking care of our inner health as well.

It is known that there will be 200,000 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the United States alone this year and that they will result in over 30,000 deaths. This is a sobering statistic. In order to maintain good prostate health we need to have information available to us to do this. We would like to review a few simple things that all of us can do to help prevent us from becoming one of these statistics.

ATTENTION ALL COUCH POTATOES. YOU NEED TO EXERCISE

Most of us are aware that regular exercise can help us lower cholesterol and protect us from heart attacks and strokes. Exercise gets the blood flowing to our cells and organs. But did you know that exercise can also protect us from some forms of cancer as well, especially when it comes to prostate cancer? If you participate in a regular exercise program research has shown that you have a 75% less chance of developing heart disease and cancer than men who do not.

Getting the blood flowing to our vital organs has the benefit of enhancing the exchange of nutrients as well as eliminating waste from our bodies. Exercise also helps us maintain good weight further reducing the chance of some forms of cancer. Stronger muscles have the benefit of generating better blood flow to our tissues.

Doing something that you enjoy will help you stay with the program over a long period of time. It can be walking, swimming, bicycling or dancing with your spouse.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE EATING A HEALTHY DIET

Scientists have not yet been able to determine why but men that eat a diet high in red meat have an increased chance of developing prostate cancer. Some feel that there may be fats in red meat that are harmful to the prostate while others think it may be chemicals that are produced by grilling. When we eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables our risk of developing some cancers are diminished.

Dietricians suggest that we eat 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Research has shown that men who follow this type of diet have much lower rates of cancer than men who do not. While consuming this many servings a day may be difficult for many, supplementation is also an option. Free radicals in the body have been shown to convert normal healthy cells into cancerous ones. For these reason tomatoes based products are particularly useful. They contain a high amount of Lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce the number of free radicals in our bodies.

DISCUSS SCREENING WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN

Your doctor will be able to access risk factors such as family history and race that you may have and suggest a proper screening schedule designed for you. Screening involves looking for signs of disease before symptoms arise. This is the most effective time to treat and eliminate potential problems that may arise.

In conclusion, while prostate cancer can be a debilitating and deadly disease there are simple changes in our lifestyles that we can make to reduce our risks of contracting it. The added bonus is along with these lifestyle changes we also reduce the risk of other problems such as being overweight and heart disease and give an added boost to our overall health and well being.
